Update, July 2003: I am advised that the 2.7 km road detour at the north end of Brantford (Hardy Rd, near 403 bridge), is no longer necessary. A path has been constructed.

I got lost traveling through Brantford, so I provide an enlargement below plus the following advice. The trail is quite good from the end of the S. C. Johnson trail to the downtown. A short while after passing the city centre the trail will become a glorified sidewalk along River Street, with a railing between it and the road. A short while after the railing ends, you will notice a berm that goes off to the left. It has a gate and does not look like a proper trail, but go around the gate and follow it. Eventually you will get to Mohawk Street, where the city is constructing trails, but in the meantime you might have to follow Mohawk Street for perhaps a kilometre. I can't be more precise because I screwed up and cycled along River Street, Birkett Lane, and Mohawk, rather than following the berms.

I am told that the city will soon improve signage and the trail surface along the berms in the south end. As I mentioned above, the surface is already quite good in the north end (which is also mostly on berms), and it is easy to follow.

The S. C. Johnson Trail was developed by the Grand River Conservation Authority, who also developed the Brantford - Jerseyville part of the Hamilton - Brantford Rail Trail. They received a lot of donations towards trail development, including a very large donation from the company that makes Johnson Wax. I have no connection with them and I am volunteering this plug because I appreciate what they have done.

These four trails that make the almost continuous link between Hamilton and Cambridge form part of the Trans-Canada Trail. There is a link to the Trans-Canada Trail web site on my Other Trails page, as well as a link to the Ontario Trails Council with information about the TCT in Ontario. The total distance of these four trails, from West Hamilton to the south end of Cambridge, is about 75 kilometres.

Below is a map of the Hamilton-Brantford Rail Trail. For details about that trail see its individual page.

The above maps have been extracted from the brochure developed jointly by the Grand River Conservation Authority, Hamilton Region Conservation Authority, City of Brantford, and S. C. Johnson and Son Limited.
