Imperial Throne Room & Electoral Palace

Trier

Trier, founded by the Romans in 16 BC, is the oldest city in Germany. Many of its attractions have the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage designation.

The top photo shows the Electoral Palace in the foreground and the Imperial Throne Room behind it. The Electoral Palace was built in the 17th century and today houses the district government. The Imperial Throne Room was built by the Romans in 310 and roofed over in 350. It is the largest surviving single room from Antiquity.

At right is the Porta Nigra (Black Gate), which is the largest surviving Roman gate in the world. Some other sections of the Roman walls have also survived, but Porta Nigra is by far the most impressive.
